I’ve spent the last 14 years intimately involved in the division 1 lesbian softball coach world. It’s more than disturbing to me that these women remain in the closet and believe 100% that their career would be over if they were openly gay. Then you have these two current stories and they are reminded to stay right where they are, in the closet. As far as online biographies, Kirk from Oregon is the only coach who names his partner in his biography. Male privilege. One male coach out and proud and hundreds of women living deeply in the closet.

If only their demonstrably heterosexual colleagues (possessed of spouses and, perhaps, children) would speak up for lesbian coaches.

Steven, Yes of course there are gay male coaches! But based on our research examining 1,600+ online coach biographies of men’s and women’s sports, male and women’s coaches, and D-I and D-III…we found only one openly out male coach and one out female coach, both whom were in D-I. I was hoping someone would make a comment about gay male coaches, so thank you. Males were not the focus of this blog, but are certainly an erased group in similar and different ways than gay female coaches. -nml
