I have honestly been surprised at the amount of "daddy discourse" around Federer. It could be a contest given that Clijsters is not a new mom in the way that Federer is a new dad. We will have to devote copious hours watching the US Open--all in the name of research, of course.
My dog theory is this: men don't travel with small dogs because small dogs are not manly--except for maybe pugs. Also, men seem more likely to travel with women for companionship. I think it is less likely--for numerous reasons--for young, hetero female players--to find someone willing and/or able to fly around the world with them and deal with training schedules, etc.
Thus speaks the cynic.
