Nicole-Thanks for clarifying your points re: espnW. I agree that mostly female contributors and announcers need to be a big part of espnW. My mistake on stating only female announcers in the previous post. I hope to see espnW succeed so young girls will have more female role models in sport and career positions of power. The dream to one day have an espnW channel as well.

KAM-thanks for posting your thoughts! I'm not sure espnW will entail a TV channel unless the digital launch is really successful. I also wasn't arguing for ALL female contributors, just the majority. -nml

I wonder what will the future hold for espnW? I think I am a tad skeptical because, I often get my hopes up like the other day take for example. I see Diana T is gonna be on ESPN cover and I think cool can't wait to see it. Finally some respect for women in bball. So I click on it and OF COURSE it has to be "the body issue" naked Diana T. Is that the only time women athletes get some press or the cover of ESPN?

But I do wonder if espnW will become some sort of suburbanite mom channel with all the uninteresting topics you listed in your blog like Self mag. because, they think that is what women want to watch. That is NOT what I want to watch and I believe I am in the espnW target market.

I hope they have sports like Field Hockey, Rugby and Lacrosse or sports that don't get any coverage at all. Not sure I agree that it should only be women announcers. I know what you are saying about providing women the opportunities to cover sports and talk with other female athletes but I think we need men as announcers too...because I don't want to see women announcers leave ESPN to go to espnW just because it is THE women's channel.

I still want to see women announcers on ESPN covering football and talking sports with men. Because visibility matters and how can we gain respect if we don't go head to head with the men? We NEED to have women on ESPN and so we should have men on ESPNW too. Plus, I agree with what you said about if they put women's BBall or Softball on the channel and off ESPN that would be a huge step backwards :< so it will be VERY interesting to see what develops.

Nicole,
I look to you for insight on what's happening! Thanks for the update on the evolution of ESPN W. I couldn't agree with you more, on pretty much every point. I hope the leadership of this initiative does not have to / want to acquiesce to the contrarian voices regarding women's sport. I have believed for decades that if done well, there is an audience for women's sport...not fitness, not beauty, actual sport, athletes and competition for competition sake. Women know how to compete! Women love to win! For certain we are all a bit different, but there is a common core than can be tapped into. Keep us posted!
